Commercial Interior Design: How Sculptural Furniture Transforms Public Spaces

The story of Stratum, a monumental parametric wooden bench created by Zorka Furniture for Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina.
Commercial Interior Design Is About Creating Experiences
Modern commercial interior design goes far beyond choosing furniture, finishes, and lighting. The most successful commercial environments create experiences that visitors remember long after leaving.
Whether designing a shopping mall, luxury hotel, corporate headquarters, university atrium, or contemporary retail space, architects and interior designers face a common challenge: how to make an interior functional while giving it a distinctive identity.
At Zorka Furniture, we believe one of the most effective ways to achieve this is through sculptural furniture.
A reception desk can become an architectural centerpiece. A wooden feature wall can transform an ordinary lobby into an art gallery. And a bench can become a monumental sculpture that completely changes how people experience a public space.
Our Stratum installation at Haywood Mall in Greenville, South Carolina, demonstrates exactly what happens when functional furniture becomes architectural art.
The Morning a Shopping Mall Discovered a New Sculpture
It was early morning at Haywood Mall.
Our installation team had spent the night assembling an enormous wooden structure inside the shopping center. After hours of carefully bringing hundreds of individual components together, the installation was finally complete.
As the mall prepared to open, the first visitors began arriving.
What they discovered was unexpected.
Standing in the shopping center was a massive wooden structure with flowing organic curves, layered surfaces, and two large sculptural openings.
At first, some visitors couldn't understand what they were looking at.
Was it a contemporary sculpture? An architectural installation? A piece of modern art?
Only after examining it more closely did they realize that this extraordinary structure was actually a bench.
That moment perfectly captured our vision.
We hadn't simply manufactured another piece of commercial furniture.
We had created an architectural art installation that people could also sit on.
This is what makes sculptural furniture such an exciting direction in commercial interior design.
Stratum: Nearly 29 Feet of Functional Art

The Stratum bench was custom-manufactured by Zorka Furniture for Haywood Mall, a major shopping destination in Greenville, South Carolina.
Unlike traditional commercial benches, Stratum was designed as a continuous parametric composition inspired by natural geological formations and flowing landscapes.
The scale of the project was remarkable.
Project specification | Details |
Project | Stratum Parametric Wooden Bench |
Location | Haywood Mall, Greenville, South Carolina |
Manufacturer | Zorka Furniture |
Length | 345 inches (28.75 feet) |
Maximum width | Over 96 inches (8 feet) |
Construction | More than 600 wooden components |
Approximate weight | 5,500–5,800 lbs |
Finish | Natural wood tone, linseed oil, protective marine-grade varnish |
Installation | Overnight, outside shopping center operating hours |
Every component contributes to the overall sculptural form, creating a sense of continuous movement throughout the installation.
Two large openings introduce additional architectural interest and give the massive structure a surprisingly light visual appearance.
Although the bench occupies a substantial area, its flowing geometry prevents it from feeling like a conventional solid object.
Instead, it resembles a natural landscape that has become part of the interior architecture.
Why Sculptural Furniture Matters in Commercial Interior Design
Commercial interiors serve multiple purposes.
They must accommodate visitors, support everyday operations, withstand frequent use, and reflect the identity of the businesses or institutions they represent.
But functionality alone rarely creates a memorable environment.
Sculptural furniture introduces an additional dimension: emotional engagement.
1. Creating Memorable First Impressions
The first few moments inside a commercial building influence how visitors perceive the entire environment.
An ordinary bench may provide seating without attracting attention.
A sculptural installation, however, can immediately establish a distinctive architectural character.
At Haywood Mall, Stratum became an unexpected visual feature that invited visitors to stop and look more closely.
For commercial interior designers, this demonstrates how furniture can contribute to a stronger sense of place.
2. Combining Architecture and Functionality
One of the greatest advantages of custom parametric furniture is its ability to serve multiple purposes.
Stratum functions as public seating while simultaneously acting as a sculptural architectural element.
The same principle can be applied to other commercial interiors.
A custom reception desk can organize a lobby while expressing a company's identity.
A parametric wooden wall can introduce texture, movement, and depth without requiring additional decorative objects.
An integrated seating installation can help define circulation areas and gathering spaces.
Instead of treating furniture as a separate layer added after the architectural design, these elements become part of the architecture itself.
3. Encouraging Interaction With the Space
Traditional furniture is usually designed around predictable interactions.
People approach a bench, sit down, and leave.
Sculptural furniture can encourage a different experience.
Visitors may explore the geometry, observe the changing patterns of light and shadow, or discover different perspectives as they move around the installation.
With Stratum, the layered wooden construction creates visual interest from multiple directions.
The two sculptural openings further emphasize the relationship between the object and the surrounding space.
This makes the installation more than a static furnishing element.
It becomes part of how visitors experience the environment.
4. Establishing a Unique Architectural Identity
Commercial properties increasingly seek distinctive design features that differentiate them from competing destinations.
Custom architectural furniture offers a way to create a recognizable identity without relying entirely on conventional decoration.
Unlike mass-produced furnishings, a custom parametric installation can be developed around the specific dimensions, circulation patterns, and visual language of a project.
Its geometry, material, finish, and proportions can be coordinated with the surrounding architecture.
For interior designers and architects, this creates opportunities to introduce truly site-specific elements.
Natural Wood in Contemporary Commercial Interiors
Material selection is one of the most important considerations in commercial interior design.
Public spaces often incorporate glass, metal, stone, and polished architectural surfaces.
While these materials can create sophisticated environments, introducing natural wood adds warmth and visual balance.
For Stratum, we selected a natural wood appearance that emphasized the layered construction and organic geometry.
The installation was finished with linseed oil and a protective marine-grade varnish.
This approach allowed the natural character of the wood to remain visible while adding protection for the finished surface.
The result is a combination of contemporary architectural geometry and timeless natural material.
Wood is particularly effective in sculptural furniture because its grain, layered edges, and surface textures contribute to the overall composition.
Rather than hiding the material's character, parametric design can celebrate it.
Behind the Scenes: Installing Stratum Overnight
Large-scale architectural furniture requires more than an ambitious design.
It demands careful coordination between manufacturing, transportation, assembly, and site logistics.
For Haywood Mall, the installation had to take place outside regular shopping center operating hours.
Our team worked during an overnight window, approximately 8 PM to 8 AM, to minimize disruption to visitors and retailers.
Before shipment, the structure underwent test assembly to prepare for the on-site installation.
The completed project required approximately five pallets for transportation, with thousands of pounds of wooden components arriving at the shopping center.
Once the mall closed, the installation process began.
Throughout the night, the individual elements were assembled into the continuous sculptural structure.
By morning, the finished Stratum bench was ready to become part of the shopping center's interior.
And as the first visitors arrived, the installation began fulfilling its purpose — not only providing seating, but creating a moment of surprise.
Where Parametric Furniture Can Transform Commercial Spaces
Although Stratum was developed for a shopping mall, the same design philosophy can be applied across many types of commercial environments.
Commercial space | Custom parametric furniture applications | Design benefits |
Shopping malls | Sculptural benches, public seating islands | Memorable gathering areas and distinctive visual features |
Hotels and resorts | Artistic reception desks, lobby benches | Strong first impressions and architectural identity |
Corporate offices | Custom reception counters, feature walls | Brand expression and welcoming environments |
Universities | Parametric benches, atrium seating | Distinctive common spaces and functional seating |
Retail stores | Sculptural display elements, wooden installations | Visual differentiation and immersive interiors |
Spas and wellness centers | Organic reception desks, wooden feature walls | Warmth, texture, and calming architectural forms |
Museums and galleries | Sculptural seating, architectural furniture | Functional elements that complement artistic surroundings |
Each environment presents different requirements for durability, accessibility, dimensions, materials, and installation.
That is why custom design is especially valuable for commercial projects.
Custom Furniture as Part of the Architectural Process
At Zorka Furniture, we approach custom furniture as an extension of architecture.
Rather than starting with a fixed product and asking designers to adapt their interiors around it, we develop furniture according to the needs of each project.
Our process typically begins with the client's concept, dimensions, and design requirements.
We then develop a three-dimensional model that allows the client to review the geometry, proportions, and overall appearance before manufacturing begins.
Once the design is approved, we manufacture the individual components, apply the selected finish, and prepare the installation for delivery.
Our product range includes:
Custom parametric wooden benches for indoor and outdoor environments.
Sculptural reception desks for commercial offices, hotels, salons, and medical facilities.
Three-dimensional wooden feature walls and architectural installations.
Custom parametric tables and artistic furniture.
Integrated wooden seating and wall compositions.

We work with architects, interior designers, commercial property owners, and businesses throughout the United States.
Our objective is to help transform ambitious design concepts into physical architectural elements.
The Future of Commercial Interior Design Is Experiential
As commercial environments continue to evolve, the distinction between furniture, architecture, and art is becoming increasingly interesting.
Visitors expect more from public spaces than basic functionality.
They respond to environments that feel distinctive, welcoming, and visually engaging.
Custom sculptural furniture offers an opportunity to create these experiences while maintaining a practical purpose.
The Stratum installation at Haywood Mall illustrates this approach.
What began as a custom seating project became a monumental wooden sculpture that challenged visitors' expectations of what a bench should look like.
And perhaps that is the most important lesson from the project.
Great commercial interior design is not simply about how a space looks. It is about how people experience and remember it.
At Zorka Furniture, we believe that furniture should have the power to surprise, inspire, and become part of a building's architectural identity.
Because sometimes, the most memorable element of a commercial interior is not the building itself.
Sometimes, it is the bench.
